A novel nanocomposite cored of cerium oxide nanoparticles (CeO2) linked with sodium alginate (Sod. Alg) using 3-chloroopropyltrimethoxysilane was synthesized via a green synthesis method using microwave irradiation to yield a new (CeO2-Si-(CH2)3-Alg) nanocomposite. Its characteristics were evaluated using Fourier-transform infrared sptectroscopy (FT-IR), thermogravimetric thermal analysis (TGA), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), Energy Dispersive X-rays (EDX), scanning-electron microscope (SEM) and high-resolution transmission-electron microscope (HR-TEM) to prove the possible binding between the reactants, as well as to illustrate the composition of this new nanomaterial. The SEM and HR-TEM established that the average particle size of the nanocomposite was 86.52 nm. The nanocomposite was investigated for the remediation of PbII, CdII and ZnII ions from water using the microwave sorption process. Various controlling parameters were monitored during the remediation processes, including pH of contact solution, irradiation time, ionic concentration of the target metals, and the mass dosage of nanocomposite. This study confirmed the excellent characteristics of the CeO2-Si-(CH2)3-Alg nanocomposite in the remediation of heavy metals from aqueous solutions.
