Postgraduate studies and Research’s announcement

Pharos University in Alexandria is proud to announce its 1st appearance in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2023 and in the Times Higher Education Arab University Rankings. In Egypt, Pharos University was ranked among the best 120 Arab Universities in THE Arab University Rankings. This is in addition to the inclusion of the University in the following Rankings Systems:

  1. THE Impact Rankings
  2. QS Arab Region University Rankings
  3. Webometrics (Ranking Web of Universities)
  4. Scimago Institutions Ranking

Therefore, now the total number of ranking systems that Pharos University in Alexandria is included is 6 International Rankings.

Dr. Mahmoud Mohy Eldin, University President of Pharos University in Alexandria and the Ranking Committee under the leadership of Dr. Mokhtar Ibrahim Yousef, Vice President of Postgraduate Studies and Research is proud to announce that it completed the submission of THE Impact Rankings (SDGs) on 10/11/2022 and now is preparing to submit the files of the following ranking systems:

  1. Arab Ranking for Universities (ARU) التصنيف العربي للجامعات
  2. THE World University Rankings
  3. QS University Rankings

PUA’s Graduate Studies and Research Council

 

The Postgraduate Studies and Research Council held its meeting No. (3) for the academic year 2022/2023 at Pharos University in Alexandria (PUA). It was headed by Dr. Mokhtar Ibrahim Youssef, Vice President for Postgraduate Studies and Research, and in the presence of Prof. Dr. Mohamed Gamal Mohamed Al-Turki, Professor, Faculty of Agriculture, former Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture, and non-PUA staf member of the Council. In addition to a group of vice deans for postgraduate studies and research in the faculties. The meeting aimed at discussing certain important issues related to the postgraduate studies and research sector at the university.

The Vice President of the University for Postgraduate Studies and Research stated that Pharos University in Alexandria adopts an ambitious and inspiring strategy to support researchers from the university. This is done by forming research groups, work teams and alliances,  and funding research projects in the name of the university, which aims to encourage researchers to increase their production of applicable academic research. indicating that the university aims to support international academic publishing by offering a rewarding financial reward to researchers who publish in internationally recognized international journals.

The Vice President for Postgraduate Studies and Research thanked the Rankings Committee for the appearance of PUA for the first time in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2023. As well as being among the top 120 Arab universities in the Times Higher Education Arab University Rankings, along with the following classifications:

  1. THE IMPACT RANKINGS
  2. QS Arab Region University Rankings
  3. Webometrics (Web Ranking of Universities)
  4. SCIMAGO INSTITUTIONS RANKING

Thus, PUA is monitored in 6 international rankings.

Dr. Mukhtar Ibrahim Youssef, Vice President for Postgraduate Studies and Research and Chairman of the University’s Classification Committee, announced that PUA had submitted, on Nov 10, 2022, the Impact Ranking file for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). and is now preparing to submit the following classification systems files:

  • Arab Ranking for Universities (ARU) Arab Ranking for Universities
  • THE World University Rankings
  • QS University Rankings 2023

The Vice President for Postgraduate Studies and Research also thanked the Dean of PUA’s Faculty of Dentistry, Dr. Ahmed Yehia Ashour, for arranging and organizing lectures for visiting professors for postgraduate students at the Faculty of Dentistry from the following universities: –

 Tufts University Boston.

 Loma Linda California

Among the most prominent decisions taken by the Council are:

  • The Council decided to work with the forms for protocol writing, inviting attendees for a seminar, announcing the seminar’s attendance, and the Seminar template, which had been prepared.
  • The council decided to specify the period required to discuss a master’s or doctoral student’s thesis from the date of registration of the protocol (the research plan proposal for the thesis).
  • The Council agreed to discuss the thesis after approving the formation of the Judging and Discussion Committee directly from the Vice President for Postgraduate Studies and Research without being bound by the expiry of any period required for the discussion to take place.
  • The Council approved the period prescribed for the authority to discuss the thesis from the date of approval of Prof. Vice President for Postgraduate Studies and Research on the formation of the Judgment and Discussion Committee.
  • The Council decided to clarify the position of the members of the supervision committee or the judging and discussion committee on master’s and doctoral dissertations when preparing forms and decisions related to this regarding being on the job, or on an external or internal secondment. As well as the correct job title for them (professor – assistant professor – teacher). This is to avoid errors inconsistent with the Universities Organization Law or the regulations applicable at PUA, as well as the higher decisions in this regard.
  • Since some faculties are offering specializations of special nature, which stipulate in their by-laws or by internal decisions of the Faculty’s Council, the publication of research from master’s / doctoral theses as a condition for submitting a validity report, and the proposal of the judging and discussion committee of the supervisors of the thesis to the department council, so the council decided to comply in this case that is stipulated in the provisions of the internal regulations.
  • The council decided that it is not permissible to oblige a postgraduate student for a master’s or doctoral level to publish research from a master’s or doctoral dissertation as a condition for submitting the thesis to the department council or to form a judgment committee, and the college council or the concerned department may not request that in any way unless there is a provision in the internal regulations for the college stipulates that.
  • The Council decided to follow the requirements of preparing the thesis from the first pages in Arabic/English, parts, statement of delivery of thesis, making modifications, inviting a discussion seminar, and an Arabic and English abstract.
  • The Council agreed to follow the rules for determining the level of foreign / English language for postgraduate students at the PUA’s faculties.
  • The council decided not to grant a master’s degree or a doctorate to a student, and not to grant it to the Council for Postgraduate Studies and Research and the University Council for Grants, unless all requirements for granting the degree were fulfilled.
  • The Council approved the proposal submitted by the Vice President for Postgraduate Studies and Research.

These projects aims to increase the rate of academic publication in various fields, and putting and promoting the university in international and Arab rankings. Provided that the research is in line with the SDGs and the national strategy for science, technology and innovation.

  • The Council approved the proposed amendments to the rules of admission and registration requirements for the regulations of graduate studies in the Department of Architectural Engineering.
  • The council was briefed on the scientific research plan presented by the Faculty of Physical Therapy. As well as the research plans seminars and scientific research skills of the teaching assistants to discuss the research ideas and develop their research skills.

At the end of the meeting, the Vice President for Postgraduate Studies and Research answered all inquiries and proposals related to all the points tackled throughout the meetings
