Aligned with its commitment to equality and equal opportunities, Pharos University in Alexandria (PUA) highlighted the key topics of “The Rights of Persons with Disabilities” Seminar. The event featured experts from the National Council for Persons with Disabilities (NCPD) and was attended by numerous faculty members and students. The key topics included establishing a roadmap for optimal interaction with individuals with disabilities on campus, and developing mechanisms for their inclusion in student activities and the educational process, ways of encouragement, services provided to facilitate their learning experiences, and providing them with the necessary logistic and technical support.
Dr. Yasmine Saad Matar, Consultant to the National Council, presented the various types of disabilities (hearing, visual, motor, and intellectual) and their specific needs, focusing on pedagogical and technical methods for inclusion. In a practical session, a faculty member participated in a blindness simulation, allowing attendees to gain a deeper understanding of the daily challenges faced by those with visual impairments.
On the legislative front, Mr. Mohamed Mokhtar Gharib provided a detailed explanation of Law No. 10 of 2018, highlighting the legal rights and guarantees ensured by the state for persons with disabilities. The seminar concluded with an interactive session led by Ms. Basant Rabie, a Sign Language trainer, where participants practiced basic alphabets and signs. This session successfully broke communication barriers and increased university awareness of sign language as a vital tool for comprehensive social integration.
