Reviving the Heritage of Sumerian Queen “Puabi”
Under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Ramadan Abdel-Maqsoud, Academic Supervisor of the Department, the Architectural Engineering Department at PUA’s Faculty of Engineering hosted Dr. Albania Nissan, a professor at the Royal Institute of Technology in Sweden (KTH). She delivered an outstanding lecture titled “Puabi: The Immortal Sumerian Queen,” attended by an elite group of faculty members and students from the engineering, architecture, and art and design disciplines.
The lecture explored creative ideas inspired by the jewelry of Queen Puabi, shedding light on the design and crafting techniques of golden artifacts inlaid with precious stones in ancient Mesopotamian heritage. Professor Nissan showcased highly accurate replica models of the Queen’s jewelry, which she executed and crafted herself. In an innovative interactive segment that lent a vivid visual dimension to the historical presentation, a student wore a full attire resembling the Sumerian Queen’s appearance, complemented by the recreated jewelry. This presentation allowed the audience to experience ancient architectural and decorative arts through a contemporary lens, inspiring creative architecture and design students.
