An International Lecture on Bio-Mining

PUA’s Faculty of Pharmacy conducted an international virtual scientific lecture in cooperation with the Durban University of Technology (DUT) in South Africa. This initiative activates PUA’s strategy to strengthen international academic cooperation and exchange transcontinental research expertise.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Neveen Loutfy, a faculty member in the Microbiology and Immunology Department at PUA’s Faculty of Pharmacy, delivered a distinguished interactive lecture for DUT students titled Bio-mining and Bio-leaching of Metals. The lecture addressed the latest contemporary biological applications and biotechnologies used in extracting precious metals from ores and recycling electronic waste using bacteria and microorganisms, offering sustainable and cost-effective environmental solutions compared to traditional chemical methods.

This scientific event falls within the framework of the ongoing partnership and joint protocols between PUA and prominent academic institutions in South Africa. The collaboration aims to transfer knowledge, develop research skills, and enhance cultural awareness and human communication among students from diverse international backgrounds.

The lecture witnessed notable student attendance and wide engagement, as the content was presented in an exciting educational manner that integrates cognitive aspects with direct industrial and environmental applications, maximizing the students’ comprehension and academic benefit. These bilateral activities are scheduled to continue through an upcoming scientific seminar delivered by a DUT professor to PUA students, consolidating this fruitful academic collaboration.
