International Co-Operation:

International collaboration in thesis supervision is a pedagogical and administrative framework where a student’s research is guided by experts from different countries, typically representing two or more distinct higher education institutions

This collaboration usually manifests in two primary formal structures:

Co-supervision: A post graduate student receives guidance from a supervisor at their home university in collaboration with a supervisor from an international institution. In this model, the degree is typically awarded only by the home university, and formal inter-institutional agreements may not always be required.

Joint Supervision: A more rigorous arrangement where the student is simultaneously enrolled in two universities in different countries. The student spends alternating periods at both institutions, and the final thesis defense is recognized by both, often leading to a double or joint degree. This requires a formal legal agreement (Memorandum of Agreement) specifying mobility periods, enrollment, and defense details.
