Under the auspices of Prof. Maged El Ghazouly, the Dean of faculty of Pharmacy and Drug Manufacturing, a seminar entitled “Science Communication” was organized on Tuesday, 3 December 2019. The seminar was delivered by Dr. Nada Ahmed, a Microbiology Masters Holder from the High Institute of Public Health – Alexandria University and the first place winner of last year FameLab Competition to simplify science. She also represented Egypt in the completion phase of the competition globally.
FameLab Competition is considered one of the largest scientific communication competitions in the world. The assessment criteria of this competition are based on the ability to explain a scientific concept to the public in three minutes. This is an annually competition at a country level and its final round is held in UK to gather the winners from all countries. The seminar was attended by a large number of students from different academic years. Faculty members and teaching assistants. The coordination of this seminar was managed under the supervision of Dr. Sameh Younis, the Leader of Student Activities and in cooperation with the Science Committee affiliated to the faculty Student Union.
At the beginning of the seminar, Prof. Maged El Ghazouly welcomed Dr. Nada Ahmed, then she talked about the concept of simplifying science and the various ways that can be used to present creatively scientific ideas such as presenting scientific content in a dramatic context. She also spoke about the other scientific competitions in Egypt or all around the world/ worldwide and how to prepare and apply for those competitions. The seminar addressed the following topics:
- Definition of science communication.
- How to communicate science effectively?
- Who can use science communication?
- Benefits of science communication to individuals and community.
