In view of the mutual cooperation between Pharos University in Alexandria (PUA) and Beijing Languages and Culture University (BLCU), 5 students from the PUA Faculty of Languages and Translation were selected to travel to BLCU in china during the period from 11th July to 10th August, 2010 to study the Chinese Language. The students were supervised by The Associate Professor Dr. Hussein Ibrahim, teaching the Chinese language at PUA. The students enjoyed their stay in China, where they had classes daily from 8:00 am to 12:00 pm with other students from China, Russia, Italy, Turkey and America. It was a very good opportunity for the PUA students to be introduced to these cultures, and know how to cope with different people. Furthermore, they have visited many historical places like the Great Wall of China, Tian an’men, Qianmen and Xidan. By the end of their stay, they were able to deal with public as their Chinese Language was enhanced a lot, as was recognized by the teachers at BLCU who were impressed by what PUA students reached in this short period of time.

In view of the cooperation between Pharos University in Alexandria (PUA) and the Embassy and Consulate general of the People’s Republic of China, Dr. Luo Lin, Director of the Center for Oriental Studies at Beijing Languages and Culture University (BLCU) and an esteemed delegation from the Chinese Embassy and Consulate have paid a visit to Pharos University on July 18, 2010 to explore all possible areas of cooperation between PUA and Chinese Universities. The delegation had a meeting with the Dean of International Relations, PUA, the Dean of the Faculty of Languages & Translation and staff members of the Arabic language Centre at PUA. They discussed the Collaboration between PUA and BLCU for establishing a Department of Chinese Language at PUA with possible joint degree award, as well as joining of Chinese students the TAFL program run at PUA. The delegation, then, had a tour around the Campus and were impressed by its facilities. The meetings and discussions were very positive and fruitful and several cooperation activities were agreed upon by both parties to be implemented in the coming academic year, 2010-2011.

The PUA-KTH student exchange program is a part of the cooperation between Pharos University in Alexandria (PUA), Egypt and the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) in Sweden. Eleven students from the Faculty of Engineering undertaking various fields of Engineering specializations at PUA were selected to visit the KTH campus from June 25th till July 15th, 2010 for a summer exchange training course. The Architectural students have been appointed for two field tasks concerning urban design. The Computer students were led at the Materials Department and ICT labs to join labs work and discover the Lab view program. Petrochemical students were oriented to Metallurgy Department to get involved in practical experiments. Mechanical students were involved in Heat Transfer, refrigeration and Nano-fluids studies. Dr. Dalia Elsorady / a lecturer at the Department of Architectural Engineering, Pharos University supervised the students during their stay at the KTH in Stockholm.
The PUA students accompanied by Dr. Dalia Elsorady in addition to Prof. Johan Maretilius, Dr. Abdelsalam Uheida and Mr. Peter Astrom (KTH staff members) in a ferry trip to Tallinn, Estonia in a guided tour to explore the city’s heritage buildings and built environment from July 12th 2010 till July 14th 2010.

During the period between 20th June and 11th July, 2010, eleven PUA students from the Faculties of Languages and Translation, Dentistry and Mass Communication have joined the WIT-PUA-SUNY and Hello Ireland Programs, run in Waterford Institute of Technology, Ireland, under the supervision of Dr. Dalia Zaki, Head of Department of Tourism, Faculty of Tourism and Hotel Management, PUA. For Hello Ireland program; the students in general showed genuine love for the program and for learning. "Dalia Mohi ElDin Mohamed" was recognized for achieving the highest grades in both exams the preliminary and final, and "Mary Kamel Dawood Saad" was also recognized for being the student who made the greatest improvement by the end of the program. For WIT-PUA-SUNY program; the students enjoyed the program and learned new issues about constitution and culture differences among Egypt, Ireland and USA. They also improved their English language and participated in all class activities and assignments. They became good friends with the American SUNY students who gave a speech at the farewell dinner explaining how they knew more about Egyptians and that there is a big similarity between them rather than differences; moreover they offered PUA students a book signed from all of them. PUA students prepared a documentary movie and a presentation about Egypt history, geography, religion, culture and education. They were really good representatives for Egypt in general and PUA in particular.

On behalf of the PUA president, Prof. Dr Magda EL-Massik, the Dean of International Relations and Quality Assurance, PUA has attended the 2nd EMUNI student multi-conference Research Souk, 2010, entitled “ Living together in the multi-cultural Society” , hosted by Alexandria University and held at Bibliotheca Alexandrina, on June 14, 2010. This event was implemented at the same time in EMUNI member sites in Different countries of the Union for the Mediterranean region, through video conference. Researchers from 19 Institutions belonging to 14 Mediterranean countries have participated in the conference and presented their projects and activities which demonstrated that education, science and technology can be the means for living together in a multi-cultural society. The Euro-Mediterranean University (EMUNI) has been created to be a real bridge between institutions, academics, students and people of good will who believe that the real learning society transcends all forms of boundaries.

In the light of the mutual cooperation between PUA and the US Embassy, Mr.Henry Mendelsohn, the Regional Information Resource officer at US Embassy and Mrs Nadia Nassef, Director, Information Resource Center, American Center Alexandria, have paid a visit to PUA and met with the Dean of International Relations & Quality Assurance, Prof. Magda EL-Massik; The IT manager Eng. Safaa EL Kady and the Assistant IT manager Eng. Mohamed Shebl. They discussed together all possible means of collaboration and what the American Center can offer to PUA students through developing the library services and how to use internet research effectively .
In light of the cooperation agreement between Pharos University in Alexandria (PUA) and Waterford Institute of Technology (WIT) in Ireland, Mr. Cyril Cawley, the lecturer of law at WIT visited the PUA faculty of Legal Studies and International Relations (LSIR) from the 4th to the 8th April 2010. Mr. Cawley conducted 3 hours lecture for 4 days in the Transport Law module taught to the students of Senior year grade. Lectures were highly successful and beneficial to the students of LSIR who expressed their appreciation to the topics covered within the lectures and to Mr. Cyril's remarkable teaching skills. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Monash University Delegation Visit to PUA In the light of the continuous efforts of Pharos University in Alexandria to enhance its International partnerships, an esteemed delegation from Monash University, Australia, has paid a visit to PUA on the 30th of March 2010. The lecture focused on the Chinese culture and its unique style concerning the exchange between man unity and nature. The art of Erhu (a two stringed Chinese fiddle) is one of the most important traditional art, it became the most typical one among all the Chinese national musical instrument . Mr. Liu played some famous Chinese pieces of music using the Erhu : the river water, horse racing, czardas and ant. Dugoni School of Dentistry- Pacific University in San Francisco (UOP), two groups of students and faculty from PUA finished up separate two-week visits to UOP, during the period between 18th and 31st of July (1st Group), and between 1st and 15th of August (2nd Group). The group was to observe and learn from the UOP faculty’s performance, interact with other educational system and cultures as well as represent the rest of PUA’s students and faculty members. The PUA students participated in classes with faculty and students at the School of Dentistry UOP, reviewed procedures and practices used in the school's clinics, and were involved in seminars with various department leaders. They also presented a patient case to an audience of Pacific students and faculty in the Third-Year Integrated Clinical Sciences seminar. The students, who attended the program, reported that this trip added so much to their experience and knowledge, whether cultural, technical or social... and that if they have the chance to repeat this trip, they would all take it. PUA students joined colleagues from the State University of New York (SUNY) at Brockport. They all participated in class activities, assignments and quizzes, where PUA students won the first place in a table quiz that has been organized between PUA and SUNY students. PUA students were presented certificates by Dr. Venie Martin, Head of Development and International Affairs, WIT, Mr. Walter O'Leary, Coordinator of North America Development, WIT and Dr. Dalia Zaki, Head of Department of Tourism, Faculty of Tourism and Hotel Management, PUA who accompanied the students during their visit to WIT. At the end of the meeting, several activities including development of PUA undergraduate Business program, cross-cultural exchanges between staff, students and faculty at both institutions and establishment of joint research in the common areas of interest have been confirmed for the coming year. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Faculty Exchange Programs, Spring 2009 Visit of Head of PUA Architecture Department to KTH As a part of the ongoing cooperation between PUA and the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), Prof. Dr. Inass Hamdy, Head of Architecture Department, Faculty of Engineering at PUA, had paid a visit to the KTH Architecture Department, during May 2009, with the aim of finding out required aspects for development of the system in PUA Architecture Engineering Department, exploring the study environment and available facilities (drawing studios, library, workshop, digital studio etc..) and getting familiar with the tectonics and building design curricula at KTH. Both parties discussed the importance of promoting cross cultural exchange between staff, teaching assistants, and students of both institutions within joined fields of study. Enhancement of post graduate T.A specializations and the chances of developing joint research activities and offering PhD scholarships were also investigated during the visit. In light of the cooperation agreement between Pharos University in Alexandria (PUA) and Waterford Institute of Technology (WIT) in Ireland, Mr. Cyril Cawley, the lecturer of law at WIT visited the PUA faculty of Legal Studies and International Relations (LSIR) from the 4th to the 8th April 2010. Mr. Cawley conducted 3 hours lecture for 4 days in the Transport Law module taught to the students of Senior year grade. Lectures were highly successful and beneficial to the students of LSIR who expressed their appreciation to the topics covered within the lectures and to Mr. Cyril's remarkable teaching skills.
In the light of the continuous efforts of Pharos University in Alexandria to enhance its International partnerships, an esteemed delegation from Monash University, Australia, has paid a visit to PUA on the 30th of March 2010. The delegation members were shown around the PUA Campus buildings and watched the facilities and physical resources of the University. With the aim of initiating new collaborative links between PUA and Monash University in both education and research, discussions were carried out between the Monash delegation members including Professor Stephanie Fahey, Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Vice-President (Global Engagement) and Dr. Nizar Farjou, Advisor, Middle East and GCC Countries Affairs and the PUA representatives, in presence of Mr. Mohamed Ragab, the Head of the Board of Trustees of PUA. The lecture focused on the Chinese culture and its unique style concerning the exchange between man unity and nature. The art of Erhu (a two stringed Chinese fiddle) is one of the most important traditional art, it became the most typical one among all the Chinese national musical instrument . Mr. Liu played some famous Chinese pieces of music using the Erhu : the river water, horse racing, czardas and ant. They were wonderful students in every regard, dedicated, hard-working and committed but with a wonderful sense of enthusiasm and a willingness to learn, as reported by WIT. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Visit of Ambassadors of African states Upon its invitation, Ambassadors of some African states have paid a visit to PUA, the guests were welcomed by Mr. Mohamed Ragab, president of board of trustees, Prof. Dr. Abdelmenem Moussa & Prof. Dr. Housny Fouad – Deputy president of PUA and Dr. Magda El Massik-head of International Affairs. The guests have made a tour in the campus to see the available up-to-date facilities of all the faculties ( Laboratories, Workshops, External Dentistry clinics...etc), The general secretary gave brief presentation about the university and its objectives. The African Ambassadors were happy with what they have seen and welcomed any future co-operation. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ DIT Delegation Visit to PUA In the light of the partnerships established between Pharos University in Alexandria (PUA) and many international Universities/Institutes, a delegation from our partner Dublin Institute of Technology, in Ireland (DIT) has visited PUA on Saturday 25th April 2009 and the delegation members were shown around the PUA campus buildings and facilities. With the aim of strengthening the PUA-DIT relationships and expanding the academic cooperation in both education and research, discussions were carried out between the DIT delegation members including Prof. Paul O’Sullivan, Dean of the Faculty of Business and Vice-President of DIT; Dr. Thomas Duff, Academic Registrar; Dr. John Jameson, Head of school, Retail & services Management; Dr. Paul O’Reilly, Head of Department of Management Studies and Dr. Amr Arisha, lecturer at school of Management and the PUA representatives, in presence of Mr. Mohamed Ragab, the Head of the Board of Trustees of PUA. At the end of the meeting, several activities including development of PUA undergraduate Business program, cross-cultural exchanges between staff, students and faculty at both institutions and establishment of joint research in the common areas of interest have been confirmed for the coming year. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Faculty Exchange Programs, Spring 2009 Visit of Head of PUA Architecture Department to KTH As a part of the ongoing cooperation between PUA and the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), Prof. Dr. Inass Hamdy, Head of Architecture Department, Faculty of Engineering at PUA, had paid a visit to the KTH Architecture Department, during May 2009, with the aim of finding out required aspects for development of the system in PUA Architecture Engineering Department, exploring the study environment and available facilities (drawing studios, library, workshop, digital studio etc..) and getting familiar with the tectonics and building design curricula at KTH. Both parties discussed the importance of promoting cross cultural exchange between staff, teaching assistants, and students of both institutions within joined fields of study. Enhancement of post graduate T.A specializations and the chances of developing joint research activities and offering PhD scholarships were also investigated during the visit. A delegation from PUA visited Waterford Institute of Technology (WIT) & Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT), in Ireland ,Tomas Bata University (TBU), in Czech Republic and Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), in Sweden, during the period between 8 -21/3/2009. Discussions took place with staff members in the areas of Hospitality and Tourism Management, Law, Business, Education and Engineering. From these meetings several activities have been agreed for the coming year. Members of the delegation gave some lectures to the students of PUA, and Dr. Eugene Labarre contributed in a workshop for immediate loading of mini-dental implants with over denture, and the number of attendance was over 250 students and dental specialists from several locations in Egypt. A Delegation from Faculty of Dentistry at PUA has paid a visit to Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry USA during the period between 1-15/2/2009. In accordance to PUA social responsibility and participation in the global and international events, the Dean of International Relations & Quality Assurance at PUA, Prof. Dr. Magda EL-Massik welcomed Prof. Dr. Kamran Mofid, the Founder of Globalization for Common Good Initiative, to pay a visit to our university and discuss the possibility of PUA participation in the globalization for common good conference which is planned to be held in Alexandria in 2011. Prof. Kamran had a tour around our University campus and mentioned the importance of this conference to draw the western attention to the eastern countries and build common interests. Within the ongoing cooperation between Pharos University in Alexandria (PUA) and its partner Waterford Institute of Technology (WIT) in Ireland, a WIT delegation has paid a visit to PUA during the period from 31st January to 2nd February, 2010. The delegation members were shown around the PUA campus buildings and watched the facilities and physical resources of the university. Several meetings were held between the counterparts in the field of law and Hotel Management to cross reference the PUA-WIT academic programs with a view to joint recognition. All other possible means of mutual collaboration including Faculty/student exchange programs, Summer School programs at WIT and staff development programs offered by WIT were also discussed. In addition, many lectures were given by the WIT delegation members, including : “walking in the shoes of the customer” by Mr.Ray Cullen, head of the department of Languages ,tourism and hospitality at WIT. “Hotels past ,present and future” by Mr.Robert Hyde, lecturer in culinary arts at WIT. “Irish Legal system” by Dr. Howlett, Head of the Department of Applied Arts, including Law. “SUNY Summer School programme, 2010” by Mr. Waletr O’Leary, Summer School Coordinator, WIT. “Hello Ireland, English language Summer Program” by Dr. Venie Martin. A workshop on the “ Advanced Food Service: Flambe’ Techniques” was also delivered by Mr. Ray Cullin & Mr. Robert Hyde to the PUA students and Faculty, at the Hilton Green Plaza Hotel. At the end of the visit , a conclusive meeting was held between the PUA & WIT counterparts, at the PUA grand Hall. Mr. Hesham Helmi, the Honory Consul of Ireland in Egypt has attended the meeting in presence of Mr. Mohamed Ragab, Head of the Board of Trustees of PUA, Eng. Alaa Ragab, Vice-president of the Board of Trustees of PUA, PUA President, PUA Vice-President, PUA Secretary General, Deans of the Faculty of Tourism & Hotel Management and Faculty of law, as well as the Dean of International Relations and Quality Assurance at PUA. The fruitful visit outcomes were summarized and the action plan for PUA-WIT cooperation during the year 2010 was confirmed.

The Faculty of Tourism and Hotel Management and the International Affairs Department at Pharos University, in Alexandria, in conjunction with Alexandria Business Association and The South African Embassy in Cairo Held the South Africa International Day and Tourism Seminar at Pharos University Conference Hall, on 11th of October 2009, as the first fruitful cooperation that brings about an awareness and understanding of other cultures and opportunities for cooperation in tourism, education and trade.
In implementation of international cooperation accord, Pharos University was invited to the “First International Week” at Tomas Bata University in Zlin, Czech Republic. Professor Abdelsamie Moet of the Faculty of Engineering was delegated to represent PUA. The event was attended by 16 partner universities including Norway, Finland, Egypt, Russia, Lithuania, Ukraine, Austria, Serbia, Hungary and Poland. Professor Moet delivered a presentation on “Outcomes-based learning at PUA: Challenges and Opportunities”, co-authored with Professor Dr. Medhat Shawky, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering. The lecture was delivered to the faculty and students of the Faculty of Logistics and Crisis Management in Uherské Hradiště. Prof. Moet also visited the Polymer Engineering Laboratories and explored the opportunities for TBU-PUA cooperation in the field of polymer engineering. The possibility of working together on joint degree in polymer engineering and related student exchange was also discussed.
In view of the cooperation agreement between the Faculty of Engineering at Pharos University in Alexandria (PUA) and The Royal Institute of Technology in Sweden (KTH), 8 PUA Engineering students were selected to attend summer training at the KTH campus in Sweden from 1st to 21st August 2009. Architecture Engineering students attended successfully two intensive summer courses, whereas Electrical and Mechanical Engineering students assisted in two projects in material sciences and metallurgy under supervision of KTH staff members. All participating students – according to their supervisors’ evaluation- have proven excellent intellectual skills during this visit.

In the light of the cooperation agreement between Faculty of Dentistry-Pharos University in Alexandria (PUA) and the Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry- Pacific University in San Francisco (UOP), two groups of students and faculty from PUA finished up separate two-week visits to UOP, during the period between 18th and 31st of July (1st Group), and between 1st and 15th of August (2nd Group). The group was to observe and learn from the UOP faculty’s performance, interact with other educational system and cultures as well as represent the rest of PUA’s students and faculty members. The PUA students participated in classes with faculty and students at the School of Dentistry UOP, reviewed procedures and practices used in the school's clinics, and were involved in seminars with various department leaders. They also presented a patient case to an audience of Pacific students and faculty in the Third-Year Integrated Clinical Sciences seminar. The students, who attended the program, reported that this trip added so much to their experience and knowledge, whether cultural, technical or social... and that if they have the chance to repeat this trip, they would all take it.

In view of the cooperation agreement between Pharos University in Alexandria (PUA) and Waterford Institute of Technology in Ireland (WIT), 8 PUA students selected from Faculties of Pharmacy & Drug Manufacturing, Languages & Translation, Financial & Administrative Sciences, and Legal Studies and International Relations had attended and successfully completed the WIT summer school “Irish Culture: Social and Legal Systems” held during the period from 16th June to 11th July 2009. PUA students joined colleagues from the State University of New York (SUNY) at Brockport. They all participated in class activities, assignments and quizzes, where PUA students won the first place in a table quiz that has been organized between PUA and SUNY students.
